| Flotilla Sailing On arrival will meet with your host and hostess and crew who will familiarize you with the yacht and equipment and any other information you require. Once settled and unpacked everyone meets at a local quay side taverna / café to get to know your host, hostess and crew and meet with the other guests who will be part of the flotilla. Provisioning can be done at the local supermarket on the marina for the next few days only, as supplies will be available at various towns, and villages along the way. Banks and ATM’s are available on the mainland and larger towns. Help with mooring When you've arrived at your destination you will be guided in by your hosts or crew and assisted with mooring. There is very little tide variation and occasionally a very little swell which makes mooring a pleasure. One of the luxuries is to tie up to a local quay side tavern just a few steps away from a table, or moor in a secluded bay within a short distance of a tavern. Local flavour Once the yacht is secured, head towards a table and quench your thirst with a cool drink and share tales of your day with other guests and crew from the flotilla or choose to explore by strolling around local village or town. Pick up that souvenir, postcard or whatever takes your fancy as a reminder of your wonderful experience in Greece. Re-provisioning is available at most of the larger towns, so you can stock up on your favourite food items. Afterwards, meet at a local tavern for a meal or just simply have a quiet meal on your boat. The local cuisine is varied and well priced, kebabs, local fish and seafood, grilled meat or chicken, and of course their Greek salads. As bread is provided on the table it is a good idea to taste their many dips. There are social evenings experience one of the Greek traditions of dancing and joining in, many interesting tavernas and a quay side get together. Holiday possibilities Throughout your holiday there are endless choices of activities, swimming, snorkeling, luncheon stops or just relaxing and sunbathing due to the short distances between some destinations. For example you can head off to one of the many beautiful bays for a swim and / or snorkel, before climbing aboard for lunch, or head off to another village for lunch. Taking your time you can find another bay for a swim / snorkel before heading to your evening mooring destination. The possibilities are endless. The waters around Greece and the Ionian Sea are clear and snorkeling is a joy. Our Experience Of Flotilla Sailing After rising early to light rain in the morning, I took the dingy to the village of Port Leone (partly deserted now after the 1953 earthquake) to visit the ruins of an old church that we were told was worth visiting. I strolled along the winding dirt road heading north to take some photo’s of the next bay from a high vantage point. On heading back I looked into some of the deserted cottages and tried to imagine life in the village as it would have been, with the women going about their daily chores, and men off shepherding the wild goats on the island. We had eaten at the island's taverna the night before and now, like the ruins in the village, it also was deserted. Memories of the wild goat being the specialty dish there the night before, made my mouth water. I wandered around the tall buildings on the quay before heading back to the yacht. As I was returning I was greeted with the sound of the goat bells ringing, as they feasted on the rain damp vegetation on the hills close to where the flotilla had anchored. It was a magical experience with the bleating of the goats and tinkling of their bells the only sounds to break the pristine silence. Afterwards, we set sail to the north heading around the tip of the island of Kalamos at a very leisurely pace. As we reached Asproyiali (Western tip on the island) the aroma of pine fragrance fill the air. With the recent rain the aroma was strong and fresh, and just filling your lungs with their scent was a wonderful experience. Dolphins met us as we tacked east and playfully swam in and out of the bow wave of the boat, creating a great photo opportunity. Your Own Memories You will find that your holiday memories of flotilla sailing around the Ionian Sea will be as unique and special as you are - as you can make your holiday anything you want it to be. Lazy one day, towns and nightlife the next, exploring the hills and ruins, fine food and interesting locals, and some of the best sailing waters around. Friends... the opportunity to make great friends for the length of your holiday - and beyond is possible, and happens all the time. Its the Greek way! We know how fondly you will look back on these days, just as we do - with a smile on our faces and heads filled with unforgettable memories. |
